Moroccan lamps make it easy to keep simple by adding a table lamp to a cozy reading space. Or an elegant chandelier for your dining room.

Moroccan lamps’ possibilities are limited only by your imagination and what’s in your budget.

What Is the History of Moroccan Lamps?

Moroccan lamps take their roots from Moorish and Moroccan architecture. Located in the northwestern tip of Africa, Morocco has been around for centuries. With Morocco strategically placed between Africa, Europe, and Asia, the town has had quite a few influences throughout those years.

Due to that location, it has taken cultural cues from places such as Arab, Persia, Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa. This has allowed Morocco to act as a “cultural conduit” for their fusion.

This fusion, as they call it, is perfectly reflected in the unique design of Moroccan lamps and lanterns. It is believed that Moroccan lanterns and were brought to India by Mughal emperors and other architectural treasures and marvels.

Moroccan lamps would find a home in the city of Moradabad and be established in 1625 AD by Rustam Khan under the then Emperor Shah Jahan. Moradabad is also known as “Pital Nagri,” which means the Brass City.

The famous brass handicraft industry is what helped this art flourish in India. Because of these roots, so many things, especially the Moroccan lamps, would one day spread across the world. Thanks to these early years, I now enjoy the integral brass and metal artwork the Moroccan culture made famous.

Moroccan lamps and lanterns are two different names you might have noticed being used. With so many different cultural legacies, these lamps are known by a few other characters.

What Is the Difference Between a Traditional Moroccan Lamp and a Turkish Moroccan Lamp?

As you may have noticed with our above picture, the Moroccan chandelier was similar to yet different from the other Moroccan lamps. Although it is still a Moroccan lamp in a way that one would be more of a Turkish Moroccan lamp.

Now, what are the differences between Moroccan and Turkish lamps? Well, first, the two lights have different origins, as their names imply.

The second and foremost difference is the material details each lamp incorporates.

Turkish lamps are made of glass mainly. Lamp designers cut colored glass into geometrical shapes and put them together to create their unique designs, colors, and patterns.

While Moroccan lamps are made of metal, and their patterns are typically made up of round holes rather than various shapes.

So to tell the difference is quite simple. If the lamp your looking at is made of any colored glass, then you are looking at a Turkish Moroccan Lamp.

And if you have one that is all metal, then a Moroccan lantern is what you have. Regardless of their differences, both are beautiful pieces and worthy of a spot in anyone’s home.

What Moroccan Lamp Would I Choose?

Talking about all these lamps got me thinking about what light I would choose. Well, that choice would be pretty straightforward if it didn’t matter what kind of space I had or finances.

I would go with a Turkish Moroccan hanging chandelier (See on Amazon). Even though the installation upfront may be a little troublesome, you cannot beat the beauty and elegance one of these brings to a room.

With the design of a Moroccan lamp and the colorful glass display of its Turkish cousin, I think the pattern and lighting it displays are simply wonderful.

Now that you know all about Moroccan lamps and lanterns, what will you choose? Will you go for a more traditional design? Or a simple yet stylish table one?

Or will you agree with our choice and go for a combination of the beautiful Turkish Moroccan lamps?

No matter the lamp you choose, we’re sure you’ll bring Moroccan culture into your home with the same style and elegance as the Moroccan lamp itself.
